Built by a couple, for couples
The story of how watching a toddler struggle to express his feelings made us realize adults have the same problem.
How It Started
It started with our son.
We were watching our toddler Leo have a meltdown — not because anything terrible had happened, but because he couldn't find the words for what he was feeling. He knew something was wrong. He just couldn't say it. So it came out as tears, as frustration, as throwing the nearest toy across the room.
We started sketching out an app that could help us decode what was really going on beneath the surface — what he needed, how to respond, how to be better parents.
Then one evening, mid-argument about something we can't even remember now, it hit us: we were doing the exact same thing Leo was doing. We had the words. We had decades of life experience. But in that heated moment, none of it mattered — we still couldn't say what we actually meant.
Why don't we build this for us?
The Problem We Kept Running Into
Here's the thing — we love each other. After 10+ years and three kids, that's not the question. The question is why two people with genuinely good intentions can still say exactly the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time.
We've all been there. You're frustrated. Your partner says something. You know they don't mean it the way it sounds, but your brain doesn't care — it reacts. Words come out sharper than you intended. They react to your reaction. And suddenly you're both defending positions neither of you actually holds.
Then an hour later, when the emotions settle, you talk it out. And you realize you were basically on the same side the whole time.
That hour shouldn't be necessary.
Our Mission
We built Unspoken to help couples communicate what they can't say out loud — especially in the moments when it matters most.
Not a therapist replacement. Not a relationship scorecard. Just a better way to understand the person you already love. A place where each partner can say what they actually mean, without the pressure of a real-time argument, and have something intelligent help bridge the gap.
Our Approach
Unspoken isn't built on vibes. It's built on the most researched and clinically proven frameworks in relationship science — translated into something accessible, private, and actually useful.
Gottman Research
Our assessment is grounded in 40+ years of the Gottman Method — the most extensive research ever conducted on what makes relationships succeed or fail. We identify the specific patterns that predict conflict in your relationship.
AI Analysis
Each partner's assessment is analyzed privately. Our AI identifies where your communication styles, attachment types, and emotional needs align — and where they create friction. No human ever sees your individual answers.
Structured Exercises
Weekly exercises tailored to your specific friction points. Each partner responds privately through AI-guided prompts, and Unspoken bridges the gap — translating your feelings into language your partner can hear.
Built by a Real Couple
Unspoken was built by a couple in Edmonton, Canada who built this because they needed it. We're not a Silicon Valley startup trying to disrupt therapy. We're two people who love each other, have three kids, and got tired of having the same miscommunications over and over.
We use Unspoken ourselves. Every feature exists because we wished it existed during a real moment in our own relationship. That's the bar — if it wouldn't help us, it doesn't ship.
